Deconstruction of Bec Winnel's Work

I choose this illustration of Bec Winnels to deconstruct because I really like the colours and I think it looks whimsical but extremely lifelike. I like how the eyes are enhanced and how they stand out, with thick dark lashes. I love the colours in the hair and how they blend really well together.
I began by drawing the shape of the face and putting in m guidelines like before then I moved on to drawing just the shape of the head, ready to begin with the features.

I then drew the basic shapes for the eyes, leaving out the lashes as I wanted get the correct proportions first.
I then began to add in the eyelashes and the eyebrow, followed by the nose. I like how realistic Bec Winnels illustrations are.
After that I added in the lips and then the hair.
I choose to study Bec Winnel because when I first seen her illustrations, they pulled me in, with the colours, the realistic yet fairytale look to them. I like the mixed medium as well. I think the eyes are enhanced digitally as they really stand out and when you zoom in it does look digital. I enjoy fine art as I would have focused on it in my GCSE years and part of my A Level years. It is very time consuming but its worth it for the end result. I think Bec Winnels style is unique and I love it.

Here I have started to add colour to my version of Bec Winnels Iluustration. I have used a variety of pencils for this drawing, chalk pencils and watercolour mostly, I have mainly used a few pinks, a dark yellow, a light brown and a dark brown to achieve this. Again it is very time consuming as I tend to be a slight perfectionist over my artwork. However I am really enjoying this assignment as I get to draw like this again. I'm really pleased with the progress of this painting and I love the colours used for the hair. I started doing the eyelashes but my pencil was too blunt and it turned out poor so i decided to scan the image in and finish it on Photoshop.
This is my final version which is finished on Photoshop. I used the clone tool to erase the eyelash I done in pencil so I could fill in the backround to look the same as the left eye. I then started to work on the eyes. Using a new layer for each area I used the brush tool to colour on top of my hand drawn version. I added detail and white spots to the iris for a more realistic feel. For the eyelashes I used specific brushes available from the internet to help me get the correct shape and I built up layers of eyelashes to achieve a thick lashline. I also used eyebrow brushes from the internet to make the eyebrows realistic. I think they worked really well and added to the feel of the picture. Once I had digitally enhanced the eyes I felt that I had to finish the rest of the face on Photoshop also to make it look better. I coloured in on top of my own hand drawn illustration on a new layer using the colour picker to get similar colours, each deifferent colour was done on a different layer and then it was blurred, using the Guassian Blur and the Blur Tool. Fot the lips I used the colour picker to get the right shade and coloured over the lips, again on a new layer, then I pulled the opacity down so my own hand drawn detail could still be seen. I also done this for the hair because I really like the effect the pencils gave. I added in the white circles and again pulled the opacity down so it would look like Bec Winnel's Illustration. Below is the Illustration by Bec Winnel.
Overall I am really happy with this piece of work and I really like the effect that Photoshop gave to my illustration mixed with my hand drawn illustration. I think the skin tones could be blurred together more to make the illustration appear more 'seamless' but I am still really pleased with the overall effect.
This is another one of Bec Winnels Illustrations that I have deconstructed. I really like the illustration as it combines various media. I also like the mix of black and white with colour. In most of Bec Winnels illustrations she uses flowers which I think add a feminine feel to the illustrations.

Again I started by drawing the basic shape of the face and inserting my guide lines.
I then began to add detail as you can see in these two sketches.
This is my sketched version of Bec Winnels illustration. To do this I used a variety of pencils ranging from 2B to 6B, I also used charcoal, chalk pastel, a graphite stick and coloured pencils. I sketched this drawing before I had done the deconstruction work. This was because at the start of the year I drew this illustration just for fun, therefore the proportions are not exact. I started to do the background but I could not get a colour close enough to the original. I decided to then scan my picture in and finsh it in Photoshop.
This is my finished version which was completed in Photoshop. I started on a new layer and using the brush tool on brush 23 with various settings I began to build up colour on the flower. I kept all the colours on the same layer then I used the smudge tool with brush 36 and various settings to smudge the colours together to create a watercolour effect. I added a small amount of colour to the eye to give some definition and turned the opacity down so it would blend in with my own sketch. For the background I used a base colour then on a new layer I used the same brush as before to create a water dripping effect. I used a light and dark colour then again using the smudge tool I went over each colour to create a more realistic watercolour effect.
Overall I am really happy with the final outcome as I feel it looks like the original illustration by Bec Winnel. I like how I have mixed my pencil sketch with Photoshop effects.
